222…

I never intended writing this blog for other people to read. Rather it was intended for my own thoughts and ramblings. I checked my stats today and 222 of you have had a quick blimp at what I have been rambling about. I am actually quite happy about that. I am still happy if not another soul reads this as it is helping me. I read a few blogs daily and dip into others periodically. I am interested in what is going on in the world I inhabit. All of the blogs I read have amazing stories of great weight loss and personal victories. I feel as if I am still struggling on the first few steps of my journey despite writing this blog for over a year and having lost 24lb. I guess some of you have lost in the region of hundreds of pounds and I really am on my first steps. I would like to say Thanks to anybody reading and please visit me again…

I feel as if I would like to make some goals for next year. I am going to think of 11 things I would like to achieve in 2011.

  1. complete a triathlon
  2. start running
  3. complete my diving lessons and pass
  4. take up watercolour painting
  5. cycle to Amsterdam and back
  6. raise £1000 for charity
  7. lose 50lb
  8. read 1 book a month for a whole year
  9. learn to pilot a boat
  10. dive with seals
  11. dive with basking sharks

My gym opened today after the long Christmas break. I eagerly wandered over the road strapped up to my Polar and with a facemask in my bag for the steam room. I did 1 hour of fat burning and half an hour of weights then wandered to the health suite and cracked open the facepack and gently simmered in the steam room for 10 minutes.

After a 40 minute cycle ride on my new bike I chalked up 807 calories. Most of it was fat burning. Dinner was a baked potato with bakes beans and veggie sausage, organic raspberry yogurt and dried apricots for dessert. Next week I am going to track my food much more closely. I don’t want to become reliant on calorie checking as I want to make food eating more natural and intuitive so I can rely on my own feeling about what I am eating.

Back to work tomorrow… 😦

Oh Hello you delicious ache…

This morning I woke up on my own terms without the wailing of the delightful children next door who normally wake me at 6am. So after a nice lay-in I stretched to a slight dull ache and smiled. I love that delicious ache in the muscles that follows a long awaited workout. But then I attempted to get out of bed and WHAM a full blown all over butt, legs and back ache. I walked like a cowboy to the hall and gingerly edged myself down the stairs to the kitchen. I had to stretch to help with the ache but it felt so good.

Start my running today too. I am going to wait until it starts to go a bit dark and will run on the beach which is next to my house. As I suffer from shin splints I have to do loads of stretches to make sure I am ok. I am not running at dusk so nobody will see ME rather I am embarrassed at my running gear which is ragged and old. I will pick up some new kit when I am back at work. I may adopt the dusk running it may suit me. May re-entitle my blog The Midnight Runner…

Back later with results…

Well I did my first run. In my excitement (yes you read that correctly ‘my excitement’) I forgot to put the Polar on so I didn’t record my calories. I warmed up and did a few extra minutes stretching and walked to the beach over the dunes and onto the hard sand. It was beautiful windless and the sea was lapping the shore. I love living here. I ran for my first minute and great no problems, walked for two minutes, ran 1 minute, walked two minutes and did this 6 times. I felt great managed it really easily. Considering I never run at all I actually enjoyed it. I have to admit to feeling like a right prat though. For some reason I was really embarrassed and stopped when I saw dog walkers approaching. Came home to my lentil soup (see recipes) and a cup of tea. I have increased my water this week. Well increased it to actually drinking the stuff. I have neglected water in the last few months. Tomorrow I am going to visit the gym for a workout, have a steam bath complete with facial and a bit of a pamper.

Day 1…

OMG… I didn’t jump happily on the scales this morning. I gingerly slipped on trying to ignore the machine but when I looked down I was 197.5lb. That means I have GAINED 11lb in two months. When I came home from South Africa in November I never managed to get back into my healthy eating and it went from bad to worse with a cessation in exercise. I felt so ill over the past few days with a huge chocolate overload that I had to pack it all in a week ahead of schedule. Today I began my healthy eating regime with breakfast and I have lentil soup planned for dinner later. I am just going to have yogurt and fruit for lunch. This week is going to be my detox week with hot water and lemon instead of my tea a few times through the day. Also I am off the cookies, chocolate and junk. Seriously I need decent food I am craving real food. Going to have a soak in the tub tonight and exfoliate all that horrid dead skin off. I ordered some new workout gear off the internet plus the cycling jersey I wanted after finding it for half price on a different website. I went for this one.

daisy shirt

I went for the UK size 16 which I know will not fit very well initially but it is for my cycle ride to Amsterdam and back next summer and I am confident I will be wearing it and hopeful it will be a little too big for me. I don’t normally go for flowery girlie clothes but I am sick of being mistaken for a man. I know the short hair is not helping but I am a size 40DD bust and that should be a dead giveaway. I hide my shape under huge baggy clothes and I expect people to be able to see through that camouflage. I also ordered some running gear…

adidas top nike top

I love this adidas shirt. I bought the shorts too but can’t really see them here. I love the colour of the Nike shirt. I am moving away from huge black men’s shirts and toward more shape flattering bright colours. I also bought a Bite Back shirt for shark conservation so I am eagerly awaiting deliveries now.

I managed to get a half hour Wii workout done too while my lentil soup was cooking. I opted for a difficult 1 hour workout but then decided to cut it to 30 minutes and I was so pleased I did. I never realised just how much of my fitness had gone in the two months I have welded my ass to the sofa. I could barely squat my knees were screaming. I got through it though. There was quite a discrepancy in what my Polar was recording and what the Wii recorded

cals wii

Polar 393 cals, Wii 247 cals. I am going with the Polar in all my workouts as I think it is more accurate. Also there is a discrepancy in the duration too as I set up the Polar and was using it while setting up the Wii.

kitchen angel this is my kitchen angel. I bought her from a craft market in Swaziland, Southern Africa in November. She has a kettle for tea on her head so she is my patron saint of tea. Bless her. I had to Blue Tak her to the cabinet by her wing to hold her straight.

well that is the last of the chocolates…phew. I start my running tomorrow only it is a rest day so I actually begin on Tuesday with 1 minute of running followed by 2 minutes of walking repeated 6 times. That is 18 minutes but I guess with the warm up and cool down it will be 30 minutes.must remember to stretch well to avoid the shin splints. I am going to run lightly on the snow as it is still deep and crisp and even out there. Am I looking forward to it? I think I am. I am going to get myself weighed in the morning too just to see the damage December has done on the scales. I can certainly feel it with a horrendous headache, aching joints and skin as dry as a desert. I can feel my belly sitting on my things too which is always a bad sign. Will be nice to use my Polar HRM on a more regular basis. Wednesday is the next time the gym is open and I am going to spend some quality time in the health suite.

Phew…

well my first Christmas completely alone passed off without a problem. It was pretty good actually so relaxed and completely stress free. woke up and brought breakfast up to bed, stayed there all warm chatting to my mates on FaceBook till 11:30am fuelled with tea at intermittent periods. Dressed and nipped out into the snow for a walk with my camera and a pocketful of bread to lure the gulls toward my lens. I love gulls they are so characterful. I enjoy watching their behaviour and the way each species has different behaviour and group together in their species. I took a few photos of obliging gulls, came home walking through the knee high soft snow to a warm house. Made tea and sat on the couch for the entire rest of the day making tea and toast, editing photos, reading blogs, eating, watching TV and chatting online to my housemate who is living in Madagascar for a year. It was good to chat as the last time I saw her was in October in Johannesburg where we met up for a holiday.

I love this one as you can see the gull turn its head to scan the ground for food.

It was freezing out and the River Mersey was breaking all the ice with its tides.

I noticed icicles hanging from my gutter and my neighbours too.

I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed my time alone today and when the prospect of a friend dropping by was mooted I felt a little annoyed as I wanted today to relax and have time to myself. I didn’t reply to the text till later so I did get my time.

Tomorrow is also a holiday as are Monday and Tuesday and I have Wednesday off work too. I have not really made any plans yet. I know I want to finish the chocolate and biscuits tomorrow and get to the gym on Wednesday. I also want to go into Liverpool for a walk around the shops and buy a new blanket. I have a few recipes and want to make lists of ingredients and attempt to cook in the new year. I need to sit and plan my lunches for the next two weeks. The day is almost over…Big Ben is chiming is chiming in London (I can hear it on my radio) so must be midnight. I need to plan my exercising too but that can wait until tomorrow. I need something to do while I sit on the couch all day and stuff my face :). x

shivering…

It is so cold here we recorded –17 degrees here in Crosby last night. My kitchen thermometer is reading 2 degrees so I don’t want to go in there at the moment. Had a little read of the BUPA 5k programme last night and it is something I would like to try before I decide on the Liverpool triathlon. I think I am going to try it starting before the new year. I want to get the Christmas weekend out of the way and then detox from all the crap I have been eating for a few week which will give me time to plan my lunch menus for the first two weeks of January.

The first 8 weeks of the BUPA 5k is looking like this (I plan on starting this training w/c 27th December)

falling into the trap of doing too much is not the aim so I am just going to concentrate on the running and see if I can sustain it for a week see if I like it and if I can actually do it.   I am going to continue with my gym sessions and will record it with my Polar HRM. I would like to buy some new running shoes if I take to it. I need to make sure I am stretching enough before I start to avoid shin splints.

Merry Yule…

I don’t celebrate Christmas but I love winter and celebrate the winter festival of Yule. It means all my celebrating will be over by next week and I can concentrate on getting myself back on the wagon. Not only have I fallen off but have rolled into a chocolate filled ditch that I can’t get out of. Thinking about what my biggest failure point is and I have to admit it is my lunchtime eating. I find myself eating rubbish at lunch and with an ‘all or nothing’ attitude it ruins my day. I am going to have to make time to plan my lunches for the week. I am going to make a big pan of veggie and bean chilli this afternoon which I can make for dinner and lunch tomorrow.

I have my new bike, it has been in the house for a week now and I have been out on it twice in that time. I love it. I bought a bike tent for it too but the weather has been dreadful with over 15inches of snow I have not been able to put the tent up or go out on the new bike. I am thinking of taking part in the Liverpool Triathlon. It will give me something to aim and train for. It is two weeks after my cycle ride to Amsterdam and back. I will need to buy some road tyres for my new bike.

I need to sit down and think about my plans for next year. What do I want to achieve? Well I want to get healthy and feel happier in myself, more confident and enjoy my life.
